How does a speech therapy session work?

Below is a breakdown of how a typical children’s speech therapy session works.  Assessment sessions can last from 45-60 minutes. Additional speech therapy sessions run for approximately 30 minutes.

1.) A full case history is taken about your child. This helps to make clinical decisions about what is contributing to your child’s difficulties for example: hearing and other areas of delay.

2.) The communication area to be tested is decided on by myself & the parent.

3.) The test/tests are administered with results and feedback given to the parent or guardian upon completion.

4.) A decision about whether ongoing speech therapy is necessary is determined.  A summary of the assessment results can be provided.

5.) Assessment sessions can last from 45-60 minutes. Additional speech therapy sessions run for 30 minutes (approx).

6.) Ongoing speech therapy involves home practice on a daily basis. This is an important part of your child’s journey to achieving normal communication skills. Worksheets will be provided.
